decorating ideas with black walls

Just so you all don’t think I’m completely cray-cray. I have my moments, trust me.  I am a tad bit obsessed with decorating dark, moody rooms these days.  Today I’m sharing a few (it was sooo hard to narrow it down) decorating ideas with black walls for more inspirational eye candy.  Feast your eyes…..

STUNNING. No other words needed.  This foyer makes such a statement all on its own. Everything else can whisper. If my foyer had walls and wasn’t two-stories I would do this in a heartbeat!

Black is not the first color that comes to mind for a nursery but I love this black “banner”. This swath of black helps to ground the crib without painting an entire feature wall. Years ago when decorating my own nursery black cribs were in vogue.  Before buying one, I made the mistake of mentioning it to my mother or friend.  Someone with an opinion I didn’t ask for.  BIG mistake.

I heard it was morbid and other stupid sh*t. But it was enough to plant a seed in my head-then I couldn’t do it.  Major design tip: don’t listen to other people. Do what you want or what you paid your designer to do.  Opinions of those not living in it or paying for it…don’t matter.

If painting a room you have to live in on a regular basis is too much for you, experiment with a pass through space. Like this bright and colorful hallway. Since the hallway is a space on its way to another room its a great place to experiment with a fun wallpaper or unusual color you may not want to live with otherwise.

This dining room has me freakin’ speechless.  That ceiling!  Although the walls are back all of the furnishings are ivory or white.  The attention to detail like the trim on the curtains and the table skirt tie  it all together for one striking room.

In case you live in the real world and pristine and proper isn’t your cup of tea here is a very family friendly version of a black dining room.  Decorating this dining room with a black chalk board wall adds charm, playfulness, and function to this cozy space.

Bedrooms make the perfect spaces to decorate with black.  Black provides an intimate, cocoon feeling.  This bedroom appears to have a black accent wall. The long mirror behind the nightstand reflects the rest of the room and is a design trick to bounce more light from the lamp around the room.  Those crisp white sheets are calling my name.

I love the monochromatic matte, sheen of this striped wallpaper.  The mix of gray softens the black wall in this room, along with the tufted headboard. The white round light fixture breaks up all of the hard lines and angles, and symmetry by adding a touch of whimsy.

This teen room is a fun play on pattern. I love the chalkboard paint on the  board and batten wall.  My tween wants a black room, which I thought was cool.

Then her brother had to chime in and say he wanted a black room too. (monkey see monkey do)  Since we are not the Adam’s Family I can’t do two black rooms- so nobody gets a black room. My daughter’s room would be an ideal black bedroom because it has  extra tall ceilings and a big west-facing bay window.

This room is all about grown up glam.  Painting the walls, trim, and chimney breast all in black lends a sexy, mysterious quality to this room.

The black walls are barely noticeable in this brightly lit bedroom.  The contoured white upholstered headboard is the perfect counterpoint to the dark walls.

To decorate with black without painting your walls with the bold hue try filling a large wall with gallery-style black and white photos with mostly black frames for a graphic look.

I call this look fierce feminine. Its girly glam but the black walls bring the fierceness.  This room is the equivalent of wearing a little black dress, classic pearls, and gold bangles-classic and fierce.

Another decorating idea with black is to paint your built-in bookcases a high gloss black like Sasha Adler did here in her own home. I love this room, makes you want to curl up with a good book.

This gem of a powder room is so sexy it’s nearly orgasmic.  Yes, yes, yes! Everything was done right with this room decorated in black.  I can’t tell if the walls are tile or wallpaper.  If its tile, I’m really swooning.  Either way…super sexy!

This kitchen is HOT. Decorating with black can be used in any room of the house.  The charcoal gray cabinets, door trim, and floor snuggle up to the black double oven.  The black and brass hood is really what makes this kitchen sing.

Try decorating with black in small doses like lamp shades and picture frames or jump right in with a hallway or whole room.  Eleven years ago when we first moved to this house I wanted to decorate our basement without buying anything new, including paint.  The only full gallon of paint I had was a matte black.

Like any self-respecting designer I consulted with my then four your old and asked her if I should paint the hallway and the main wall in our movie area black.

Being  four, she enthusiastically said, “Yes, then it will be like a cave down here!”  O-kaaaay.  Old World Pre-historic  was not the look I was going for, but I thought, what the hell? ( And WHY was I asking her anyway? But this is what happens when you become a SAHM with no adults to talk to all day!) Besides, it was only paint. And I went for it.  In a window-less room. With one track light.

The results were amazing.  People still compliment that hallway.

Most people think like my daughter.   A dark room will feel closed in. Claustrophobic. Cave like.

In fact, just the opposite occurred. The walls receded and the hallway, with a credenza in it-feels expansive.  It really is amazing and I’m so glad I experimented and took the plunge.

It’s only paint.
