Light it up!
Woo hoo, we are more than half way done with our challenge, thanks for participating! Home for the Holidays Challenge Day 5 we are talking about lighting and how it affects the mood and personality of a room.
Personally, I have dimmers on nearly every light in my house-even the bathrooms (Especially the bathrooms, it is way too bright t in there in the mornings.) Why…because lighting is a big influence in how a room feels.
The holiday season rules and reigns when it comes to lighting.
Twinkling lights everywhere are magical, candle light, votive lights, fireplaces and it is all reflected back to you as it bounces off glass and crystal ornaments, silverware, china, and if you’re lucky…snow. So fun!
Once our tree is up its the first thing I turn on in the mornings because its still dark and the kids can have breakfast with the tree lights blinking. The best is having the tree on in a dark room!
Let’s light it up!
These lighting tips can be used during the holidays but long after as well. By only using one overhead light you cast dark and strange shadows throughout your space. In fact it is better to light the corners of a room with lamps or uprights and to layer your lighting just like you would with clothing.
Ideally, a room would have general lighting from a ceiling fixture on a dimmer to control the intensity, then floor or table lamps for task lighting, and finally accent lighting to highlight an art piece or bookcases or flickering candles.
Three elements of a well lit room.
1. General lighting- pendant fixture, chandelier, recessed can lights, fluorescent lighting ( on dimmer switches always if possible, accept fluorescent’s don’t dim)
2. Task lighting- under counter lights, reading lamps, pendants hanging over a kitchen island, or sink
3. Accent lighting- wall sconces, art lights, uplights, candles, Christmas tree lights
I use lamps in a room more than over head lighting. Lamps are a great opportunity to not only add functional light, but personality, decorating, and character to your room.
Changing something as simple as a lamp shade on a lamp base really changes the personality of that lamp.
How to update a lampshade.
Did you know that it was super easy to create you own drum shade for a lamp you already have? I like that lamp has created the DIY Lampshade Kit with everything in it, except your fabric of choice so you can restyle an old lamp.
If you have a lamp you love but the shade is damaged or outdated you can salvage the lamp by creating a new lampshade for it. Score a vintage lamp find lamp and want to create a new shade for it to match your current interior, it is totally doable.
Can you say wowza to this Before and After?
