So glad you’re back for secrets to decorating like a pro-part 3!
As a quick recap, I create Soulscapes as inspirational eye candy which sometimes reflect how I feel or the environment I’m in. I use Soulscapes as inspirational images to design a room around. I’m sharing my design process and decorating secrets with you so you can do it for yourself or begin to think about how you can incorporate the feel of your own inspirational item into your home.
I break down how to take an idea, a piece of inspiration, be it a stone, vintage photograph, or your child’s artwork and translate your inspiration into multiple interpretations which can be incorporated into a decorated room.
Inspiration + Interpretation = Individual Style
As promised we are continuing to use our Inspirational bird from my Unfurl + Awaken Collective, I’ve decided to call her Petunia since we’ve been hanging out together so much. Last time our girl, Petunia inspired a family friendly living room Design Soulution but today we are going to use her to create a serene sanctuary with Mini Design Solution No. 3.
Secrets to decorating like a pro-tip 1: create a statement wall
Create a cozy environment by wrapping the room or one wall in this black and white modern birch tree wallpaper. The wallpaper sets the tone for the room but doesn’t feel like your in the wilderness. And of course the birch tree wallpaper ties back to our inspirational bird because birds live in trees.
Secrets to decorating like a pro-tip 2: add layers to your bed
Designers are pros at making beds look luxurious and cozy. This sea blue quilt and shams are the perfect color to represent the markings on our inspirational bird. This soothing color plays perfectly into the quiet sanctuary I wanted to create.
Secrets to decorating like a pro-tip 3: add a statement light fixture
I love when I find the perfect piece for a design concept. This chandelier is a mix of glamour and rustic with its sea blue glass beading and hemp wrapped frame. The shape of the glass beads remind me of seeds, or bird seeds to translate our inspirational bird imagery.
Secrets to decorating like a pro-tip 4: use painted pieces of furniture
Not all pieces of furniture have to be stained dark wood. This hand painted taupe nightstand makes a great accent piece and contributes to the quiet, serene atmosphere.
Secrets to decorating like a pro-tip 5: budget for art + accessories
The watercolor bird art piece is another serendipitous find. It looks like our photograph of Petunia done in watercolor! Its contemporary and a bit abstract but ties in nicely to the room. Rooms without art and accessories feel a bit soul-less. This is a great opportunity to add personality and character to a room. One of the important secrets to decorating like a pro is to tie a concept together with art and accessories.
Secrets to decorating like a pro-tip 6: use throw pillows to add texture and color
Another big secret to decorating like a pro is to use throw pillows abundantly. The true designer secret to using throw pillows is the scale and filling inside of them. Designers use down filling because of its loft, or ability to fluff up easily. Designers also design pillows that are larger than the average pillow you can purchase in retail stores. For a very luxe and plush room have pillows made larger than the standard 24″ square. I selected this pillow because the texture is seems chaotic and reminds me a cage or bird’s nest.
Here is the Mini Design Soulution No. 3 Serene Sanctuary Style board along with links to the wonderful items selected for this space.

So what do you think of this Mini Design Soulution No. 3? I used one inspiration piece, the photograph of the bird, and translated it into three completely different decorative styles in Mini Design Solution No. 1 and Mini Design Soulution No. 2.
Stay tuned I’m going to use our little inspirational bird, Petunia, one more time to translate another space for you.
I hope you’re loving these, please share them with anyone you think may enjoy and benefit from them. Also, Make sure you don’t miss future Design Soulutions by signing up to receive the next installment of Ellements of Style here.
