Make a Statement

how to style your sofa, Home for the Holidays Challenge

Is your sofa looking sad? Those matching throw pillows that came with your sofa are deflated and have seen better days? Today I’m showing you how to  style your sofa for the holidays and give it new life.

We are cranking right along with Day 4 of the Home for the Holidays Challenge.

Throw pillows are the easiest way and give the biggest bang for the buck when it comes to adding the wow factor to your sofa. Today I’m going to show you several different color schemes to style your sofa for the upcoming holiday season.

As a rule of thumb I like to keep the throw pillows to three-four max. Otherwise they get in the way or just look cluttered. The key to successful sofa styling is to mix a variety of patterns and textures.

Don’t get alarmed. I’m going t0 show you the trick to mixing different patterns and making it all work.

Guidelines for mixing pillow patterns

1. Use an  overall pattern
2. Add in a medium or small scale pattern (checks, small over pattern or stripes)
3. Add texture- inviting to touch (faux fur, knit, nubby, appliquéd, ruffled, or beaded)
4. Use a solid color selected from the overall patterned pillow to balance out the other patterns/textures
Here is a visual example of the pillow legend above.

Got it? You can always refer back here if you forget.

If you invest in standard size pillow inserts, I advice a feather blend because that is what gives the pillow its “body”. Feather/ Down pillow inserts last forever and really make the pillows look full and plump. An good average pillow size is 20″ X 20″.

If you buy pillow inserts then you can just purchase the exterior pillow covers and easily change your pillows from season to season. You can purchase pillow inserts from nearly any home decor store but not all pillow inserts are filled with down feathers so make sure you check the tag.

Nothing transforms a room like a couple of new statement making throw pillows, or a cozy throw folded on the arm of a sofa or chair.

Here are some ideas for  how to style your sofa and make a statement with throw pillows this holiday season.

Neutrals

Home for the Holidays Challenge Day 4 Make a Statement and style your sofa for the holiday season. hosted by Elle C. Wolfe Interiors

If you love neutrals you’re in luck because the trend this holiday season is big on neutrals with lots of sparkle for texture and light. Just taking off the little strike pillow and adding a metallic Fall Greetings pillow easily styles the sofa for Thanksgiving.

Ditch the animal print pillows and add in embellished sparkle pillows to kick the look up for Christmas!

Classic Earth tones

If you love earth tones then this look is for you. Everyday earth tones easily transition into the fall and classic green and red Christmas season.

Farmhouse Chic

Farmhouse Chic, Modern Farmhouse whatever you call it its been trending big for the past couple of seasons. Think plaids, checks, handmade, sheepskin, and burlap all mixed together with chalkboards and a bit of bling sometimes. A great textural feast for sure.

And don’t be afraid to mix different plaid and check patterns together as shown in this Farmhouse Chic look. Just keep the pattern mixing guidelines in mind. Large patterns mixed with small patterns. So a buffalo plaid and a check totally work together as demonstrated here.

Glam Feminine

This one is a funky feminine glam leaning towards bohemian look. I always love the non-traditional purples, pinks, and oranges you see during the holiday season as well. So I thought I would throw in this look as well.
