Β

It is Β finally week 6 of the One Room Challenge and I get to reveal the urban industrial Β bedroom makeover I have been working on for my teen daughter. It all started six weeks ago with the bi-annual decorating design event started by Linda Weinstein of Calling It Home Β created in 2011.

Β

There are 20 invited designers who have access to some great product sponsorships to help them along as they blog about their weekly progress. Also, Β other decorators, designers, and bloggers can register and participate as a guest participants, like myself.

Β

Β

This is my very first year participating as a guest and it has been a world wind and fun ride filled although there have been many challenges along the way. Β This year’s official media sponsor is Better Homes and Gardens and they will select for the first time two guest participants to be a part of the invited sponsored group next Spring for the One Room Challenge.

Yay, so exciting. You can check out all of the big reveals from the Sponsored participants here, and the guest participants here.

Β

Β

In case you just wondered in and have no idea what I’m talking about, you can binge read all about how this journey started in week1, week2, week3, week4, and week 5.

The goal here was to update my daughter’s bedroom which was still in the toddler stage although she has bee a teen for a few years now. Boy, time really did fly. It seems as though she just turned ten, and not on her way to sixteen….eeeeek! Needless to say Miss K’s room was beyond in need of a makeover.

Β

Β

It took a while for us to settle into a vibe and flow for her 12′ x 13′ room. We started where I always advice my clients to end, with a paint color. Β So do as I say, not as I did-select your paint color last, although it is usually the first big element change in the room.

Β

This a before picture of Miss K’s room.

Β

My daughter/client, Miss K doesn’t like much in the way of fashion and has no idea what the ‘trends’ are and doesn’t give a hoot much about them.

Β

Β

She does love musical theater, oversized tee shirts, converse sneakers, hoodies, The Walking Dead, rap music, the color black, and fellowshipping with her small Christian group at church. Initially, I Β thought I did not have much to work with to devise a conceptual design plan.

Β

Β

In reality, I knew what she would like, but I wanted to use the design concept I had been toying around with in my head in another part of my home. Since Β I wanted to create a personal space Miss K would enjoy and one that reflected her personality Β so much more all the walls were painted Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black and we uncovered more bits to showcase her magical self.

Β

Β

After the walls were painted black the drama of the room is showcased by this magnificent graffiti peel and stick wallpaper mural. Wow- I just love it so much and it really is the perfect backdrop for the bed. What i really like about the mural is it offered opportunities to add additional colors to the black and white palette.

Initially, Miss K said she wanted a black , white, and red color scheme and all I could think of was the roaring 80’s with black leather sofas and red lacquered tables. Uuum-No. I was relieved to learn she only wanted a tiny bit of red in small doses she could change out easily. Thank the design gods!

Β

Β

I started with a custom upholstered headboard with a contrasting welt trim detail. I’m sure you are wondering why in the name of the design gods I sourced a light, darn near-white fabric headboard for a teenager to abuse? Well, that fabric is actually a family-friendly, performance fabric that is easy to maintain with a basic water/ bleach cleaning solution. The charcoal gray/ black trim is also a high Β quality performance fabric.Β

Β

Β

From the online photo of the mural I could tell there was a bit of acid yellow/green and some reds mixed in as well as part of the graffiti pattern which lead me to purchase the gray quilted coverlet set with the acid green/ yellow color on the reverse side. In all of my sourcing I did not find any other items with this unigue color.

Β

Β

Prior to the onslaught of the holiday season, red was just as elusive as a color to source, so in October when I came across the velvet lumbar pillow I did not hesitate to snatch it up.

Β

Β

The rough hewn dresser and nightstand with the bronze textured hardware were the perfect elements to add to Miss K’s Urban Industrial bedroom. Since the headboard cover quite a bit of the Β mural I wanted to keep the lamps airy and simple while offering a good source of light.

Β

Β

Β

Β

Speaking of light source did you take a peep at the new metal and linen pendant light fixture? It is the perfect volume for the 10+ foot ceiling height.

Β

Β

Opposite the bed wall is Miss K’s much needed adult sized and structurally sound dresser. Did I tell you how much I love the textured graining on this dresser? It is a solid piece of furniture with plenty of storage space. This soaring 10’10” wall was the perfect location to display Miss K’s favorite Inspirational and spiritual quotes. We bought several different sized frames in different finishes with this idea in mind.

Β

It was the perfect outlet for Miss K to be creative and put her personal stamp on her space. It can grow and evolve.Β

Β

Β

One other request Miss K had was for a desk to be in her room. The desk had to be fairly compact, but hold some storage and display and fit the aesthetic we were trying to achieve without breaking the bank. This modern, yet industrial version of a secretaire really fulfilled all of our needs and just squeaked into its allotted space. Since only one person is using the room its position is fine.

Β

Don’t you just love the cool fox wearing spectacles perched above? On a rare occasion Miss K and I were out shopping one evening and found this guy. We had to have him because we are impartial to glasses. As it were all Β four members of our immediate family have four eyes so eyewear is always on our brains.

Β

Β

And this is the desk closed. Cute…right?

Β

A recent problem that arose on the road to finishing off this room was the bay window Β drapery rod hardware arrived without the central rod. The replacement was just not going to arrive in time for installation and photos. Β

Β

Miss K is a bit ticked off she can not move back into her room just yet, but what are you going to do? Every design project has a problem or two we will have to wait a wee bit more and have her draperies installed next week.

Β

Thank you for following along on this One Room Challenge journey. I would totally do it again. I think the room turned out fairly well and is a much needed improvement. Β Miss K likes it too, I can tell because she has been kind of hanging around a bit more.

Β

Β I must say a very special thank you to my son, JP, for so patiently helping to move items around and take photos of this room. Mwah!
